Commissioner of Education William L. Librera Returns to Montclair High School

Commissioner William L. Librera, a former Montclair School District Superintendent, will return to the district on Friday, Oct. 4 at 8:45 a.m. to tour Montclair High School’s Civics and Government Institute (CGI), located at 100 Chestnut Street.

Reporters and photographers are encouraged to attend.

The Commissioner, who served as district superintendent from 1992 to 1997, steadfastly supported efforts to create the institute five years ago. Since then, CGI has developed into a strong grades 10-12 program with 185 students and nine faculty members. CGI is a program geared toward providing an educational environment through which students can develop an understanding of their roles as functioning members of the community, state, country and world.

The institute strives for the following:

  • to instill civic values in students by helping them realize their potential and educating them so they can contribute as positive citizens in their surroundings;
  • to give students a voice through committee work, student government and event planning; and
  • providing students with skills, values and the ability to participate and contribute in a democratic society as responsible private citizens.

Dennis Murray, CGI’s program coordinator, credits the Commissioner with giving unwavering support to the institute in its infancy and for that reason invited him back to the district to see how the program has grown.
