State Board Honors Pequannock Township High School Senior as December Student of the Month
The New Jersey State Board of Education today recognized Michele A. Sarnelli, a senior at Pequannock Township High School in Morris County, as the December Student of the Month.
Sarnelli, a member of the National Honor Society with a 4.59 Grade Point Average, is also an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar- an honor bestowed upon a student with an SAT score of more than 1260 and for being in the top 10% of their respective class.
"The State Board of Education is delighted to recognize Michele Sarnelli as our December student of the month," Board President Arnold G. Hyndman stated. "She represents the very best attributes of New Jerseys students through her academic achievements, community involvement, and extra-curricular school activity participation. Micheles excellence in numerous areas bodes well for her future success. She is clearly deserving of our acknowledgement and support."
"The Department of Education is proud to join the State Board in honoring this outstanding student, one who is surely a current and future leader," Commissioner of Education William L. Librera said. "Micheles commitment to high personal achievement has not diminished her commitment to helping others in her school and in her community to be the best they can be. She is well deserving of this recognition."
In addition to her impressive academic resume, Michele has been actively involved in providing volunteer service including work at a community soup kitchen, where she serves as a tutor, visits nursing homes and hospital patients, and assists with local food and clothing drives. She has also been involved in numerous extracurricular activities in school including: the high school varsity Field Hockey team, Spanish Club, Peer Leadership Program and the Interact Club, which also performs community service activities.
Each month during the school year, the State Board recognizes a student or group of students for accomplishments in community service, the arts, academics and sports. Last month, the State Board honored Julie Carbone from Hawthorne High School in Passaic County.
