DOE to Host Intervention and Referral Services Workshop

The Department of Education (DOE) will host an "Intervention and Referral Services Workshop" on Friday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Gloucester County Office of Education. The office is located at 1492 Tanyard Road in Sewell, NJ.

The workshop, entitled, "Intervention and Referral Services: Implementing Building-based Problem Solving Teams (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7)," is designed to provide school district and building staff with an orientation to the building-based problem-solving functions required under the Intervention and Referral Services regulations.

Hosted by Gary Vermeire, coordinator of the DOE's Safe and Drug Free Schools Initiative, the following information will be presented in this session:

  • The provisions of administrative code (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7) for the implementation of intervention and referral services;
  • The benefits and purposes of using the building-based multidisciplinary team model as a best practice for addressing academic, behavior and health barriers for students in grades K-12;
  • The theoretical and research underpinnings of the collegial and collaborative problem-solving team model;
  • The procedures for identifying and assisting students with academic, behavior and health problems;
  • Planning elements for Intervention and Referral Services program development and implementation;
  • Applications of the Intervention and Referral Services program that support school-wide planning; and
  • The New Jersey Department of Education's services in support of Intervention and Referral Services teams.
