State Board of Education Recognizes October Student of the Month

Kelsey Von Tish, a senior at Hunterdon Central Regional High School and president of her school’s math honor society, was honored today by the State Board of Education as the October Student of the Month.

Kelsey is the May 2006 recipient of her school’s Excellence in Mathematics Award and is in the top 1 percent of her class.  She is involved with her school’s ski club, plays both acoustic and electric guitar, and is a member of both the math and Spanish honor societies.

“Kelsey’s academic achievement is worthy of recognition, as is her commitment to her community and peers,” said State Board President Arnold G. Hyndman.  “The State Board is proud to honor her.”

“As a former math teacher, I am impressed and extremely proud of the dedication and success Kelsey has shown in this subject area,” said acting Commissioner Lucille E. Davy.  “My hope is more students can thrive in math the way Kelsey has.”

In addition to her work in both the math and Spanish honor societies, Kelsey is involved in the Student Environmental Alliance, the South Branch River Cleanup and Meals on Wheels.  She also tutors students in math as part of her work with Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society.

Each month during the school year, the State Board of Education recognizes an outstanding student or students from one of the 21 counties in the state.
