State Board of Education Recognizes Students of the Month from Union County
Justin Petrillo, a senior at Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains, and Shannon Spaziani, a senior at Linden High School in Linden, were honored today by the State Board of Education as the June students of the month.
Petrillo was recently named a Young Epidemiology Scholar National Finalist Winner and completed his senior year internship at Princeton University, where he worked in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab.
Spaziani is the commanding officer of her school’s award-winning ROTC program. She is also a Peer Group Leader and was recently named a World Class Student by the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.
“Both of these students are excellent examples of what all students in the state should strive to be,” said Commissioner Lucille E. Davy. “Justin’s extensive involvement in the sciences will serve him well as he prepares for participation in the 21st century workforce, as will Shannon’s outstanding leadership experiences.”
“Each month, we honor the best, and this month is no different,” said State Board President Arnold G. Hyndman. “Justin and Shannon are perfect representatives for our state as they move forward in their education careers.”
Each month, the State Board of Education recognizes an outstanding student, or group of students, from one of the 21 counties in the state. Gina Jeon, a senior at Ridgefield Memorial High School in Bergen County, was honored last month.
