E-Filing Now Available for Background Check Applications and Fees
Commissioner of Education Lucille E. Davy today announced that the Department of Education’s Criminal History Review Unit now is accepting online applications, fee payments and requests for duplicate approval letters.
New applicants for school employment, current school employees transferring districts and school bus drivers applying for initial school bus endorsements or renewing driver’s licenses can submit their requests through the department’s Web site at http://www.nj.gov/education/educators/crimhist/. DOE will continue accepting applications and payments by mail, as well.
All educational facilities and authorized school bus contractors are encouraged to utilize the electronic payment process for criminal record check requests or requests for duplicate approval letters.
“Providing online access for criminal history background check applicants and school bus drivers will offer more convenience, save time and resources, and ensure greater accuracy of the criminal history database,” the Commissioner said.
“Governor Corzine is strongly committed to providing improved access and customer service in all state departments by utilizing online services wherever possible,” Commissioner Davy said. “We at DOE are pleased that we are now able to offer this convenience to more than 70,000 educators, school staff and bus drivers who must apply for background checks every year.”
In late April, the Commissioner announced that DOE was switching to a paperless system for education certificate applications to reduce processing time delays. DOE’s Office of Licensure and Credentials annually processes approximately 35,000 applications for teacher, administrator and educational services certificates.
