5.12.8.9.10 - ENVIRONMENT

I. MACRO STATEMENT

INVESTIGATE, INTERPRET, AND EVALUATE THE ENVIRONMENT AS A SYSTEM OF INTERDEPENDENT COMPONENTS AFFECTED BY HUMAN ACTIVITY AND NATURAL PHENOMENA.

II. KNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS

A STUDENT SHOULD KNOW THAT:

A. NATURAL PHENOMENA AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES IMPACT HUMAN
     ACTIVITY.

  1. Weathering can be physical, chemical or biological.
  2. The constructional forces build up the earth's surface by raising the crust and forming new landforms.
    1. The forces originate from within the earth and include the forces of folding and faulting, earthquakes, volcanoes and vertical movement of masses of different densities.
    2. Some of these landforms are plains, plateaus, and mountains.

B. THE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES BY HUMANS IS ACCOMPANIED BY ASSOCIATED RISKS
     AND BENEFITS TO THE ENVIRONMENT.

  1. Analysis of the risks and benefits to the environment is guided by the use of scientific, economic, and other data.

C. INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS MAY HAVE DIFFERING POINTS OF VIEW ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.

III. SKILL STATEMENTS

TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS OUTLINED ABOVE,  A STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • Evaluate the impact of a natural phenomenon on an area and predict the impact on the population.
  • Use data to analyze environmental risks and benefits associated with human activity and the use of natural resources.
  • Apply the concept of ecosystems to understand and propose solutions to problems regarding traditional and alternative energy sources, land and soil management, waste management, and water and air quality.
