5.3.6.7 - HISTORY OF SCIENCE

I. MACRO STATEMENT

RECOGNIZE THAT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CAN RESPOND TO AND GENERATE CHANGES IN SOCIAL/POLITICAL CONDITIONS AS DEMONSTRATED BY THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF SCIENTISTS.


II. KNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS

A STUDENT SHOULD KNOW:

A. EXAMPLES OF SCIENTISTS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MAJOR IDEAS AND
      THEORIES IN SCIENCE.

B. HISTORICALLY, AN INTERACTIVE RELATIONSHIP EXISTS AMONG SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,
     AND SOCIETY.

  1. Science, technology, and society are closely related.  When any one component changes, there will be an effect on the other two.
    1. For instance, discovery of electromagnetic waves led to the inventions of television and radio resulting in home entertainment and a better informed people.

III. SKILL STATEMENTS

TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS OUTLINED ABOVE, A STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • Recognize the cause and effect relationship between social/political needs and the field of science.
  • Sequence the events in a development of a theory.
