I. MACRO STATEMENT

INTEGRATE MATHEMATICS AS A TOOL FOR PROBLEM-SOLVING IN SCIENCE, AND AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSING AND/OR MODELING SCIENTIFIC THEORIES.


II. KNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS

A STUDENT SHOULD KNOW THAT:

A. SCIENCE USES MATHEMATICS AS A TOOL TO DETERMINE AND SUPPORT CONCLUSIONS.

III. SKILL STATEMENTS

TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS OUTLINED ABOVE, A STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • Perform mathematical operations based on the degree of precision of the input data.
  • Interpret data using graphs, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Formulate mathematical relationships from collected data.
  • Use appropriate mathematical tools to collect, display, model and analyze data.
  • Evaluate possible effects of measurement errors on calculations.
  • Explain the physical relationship expressed by mathematical equations.
  • Use computer spreadsheets, graphing, and database programs to assist in quantitative analysis.
  • Use mathematical models for scientific inquiry.
IMPORTANT:
ALL STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO FORMULAS, CALCULATORS, AND MEASUREMENT DEVICES FOR INSTRUCTION.  FOR THE PURPOSE OF TESTING, STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO FORMULAS, CALCULATORS, AND MEASUREMENT DEVICES.
