5.11.7.8.9 - UNIVERSE

I. MACRO STATEMENT

DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORIGIN, EVOLUTION, AND STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSE.

II. KNOWLEDGE STATEMENTS

A  STUDENT SHOULD KNOW THAT:

A. THE "BIG BANG, "STEADY STATE," AND "PULSATING UNIVERSE "ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR
SCIENTIFIC THEORIES CONCERNING THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE.

B. THE LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT VARIES ACCORDING TO LATITUDE AND SEASONS.

  1. Because the earth turns on its axis and is tilted (23 1 /2 degree) from the vertical to the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun, the intensity of sunlight varies throughout the year.
  2. The length of daylight on any point on he earth is dependent on its latitude and the position of the earth in its orbit relative to the sun.

III. SKILL STATEMENTS

  • TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS OUTLINED ABOVE, A STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
  • Evaluate evidence that supports scientific theories of the origin of the universe.
  • Construct a model that illustrates how seasons and latitude affect variation in the length of day and night.
  • Use a diagram to show how seasons in the northern and southern hemisphere are opposite at any given time.
