Cluster 1: Writing to Speculate

Summary of Content to be Tested

Students will be given 25 minutes to complete the Writing to Speculate section of the GEPA assessment.

In this part of the test, students will be given a picture prompt. Students will given a picture, prewriting space, and a Writer's Checklist of important points to remember as they write. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well they can organize and express their ideas in written text.

To receive a proficient score, according to the New Jersey Registered Holisitc Scoring Rubric, students will need to:

  • Respond to the given prompt noting setting and characters.
  • Create a single focus.
  • Include an introduction, appropriate details, and a conclusion.
  • Include compositional risk such as figurative language or dialogue.
  • Create sentences in various forms with appropriate punctuation.
