| abstract |
Not realistic, but often based
on an actual subject. |
| asymmetrical |
Different on either side of a
central axis. |
| collage |
The practice of gluing down groupings of
different textured papers and materials on a plane surface
to make a picture. From the French word Colle, meaning,
"to paste." Usually implies two-dimensional artwork. |
| Cubism |
A phase of post impressionism epitomized
by severe flattening of space across the picture plane,
a consistently inconsistent light source, and the collapsing
of the traditional fore-, middle-, and background areas
in composition. Cubists often used intersecting geometric
forms (cubes, cones, etc.) to produce a specific aesthetic
sensation of movement. |
| facet |
A small, flat planar surface. In groupings,
they create patterns that have a "relief" effect.
Facets are generally achieved by the cutting, scoring and
folding of flat, continuous planes. |
| geometric |
Based on simple regular polyhedrons such
as circles, squares, rectangles or triangles. |
| neutral color |
Generally considered to be gray, black,
white, and lightly saturated hues of brown. |
| organic |
Shapes or forms associated with living plants
or animals found in nature. |
| plane |
Plane is the surface area of a given or
defined shape. Planes may be flat or curved, concave
or convex. The greatest attributes of planes are their
ability to establish and modify direction. |
