Lend an Ear to Learning

Project Activities

Prior to beginning novel
  • Set purpose for reading—build schema.
  • Discuss tracking expectations for students.
  • Create and/or identify learning activities to match novel selections.  (For possible suggestions, see “91 Ways to Respond to Literature” and other resources in the see appendix)
  • As with any new novel, implement pre-reading activities such as introduction of new vocabulary.

During reading of novel

  • Play CD at a comfortable volume.
  • Check that students are tracking for maximum fluency.  Assist and model for students as needed.  Tracking along with the CD is a developing skill depending on individual student ability.
  • As a directed reading activity, stop and question/discuss the novel according to daily objectives addressing literary elements.
  • After some practice with tracking, quickly pause the CD and ask a volunteer to tell the next word.  This really encourages students to follow along.
  • Assign appropriate activities to reinforce concepts discussed as well as assess student understanding of novel.

After Completion of Audio-book

  • Survey students to determine their impressions about the use of audio books in the classroom.
  • Assign any extended projects such as book reports etc.

Assessment

  • Follow classroom/school guidelines for literature based assignments.  Suggestions for differentiated assignments can be found in appendix.
  • Develop rubrics to match a variety of literacy-based activities.  (See rubric web site in appendix.)
