- Invite an Ecuadorian to guest speak to the class.
- Invite a Science teacher, zoologist, or biologist to the class to discuss the ecology of the rainforest and the Galapagos Islands.
- Borrow artifacts from museums, such as Newark Museum from that culture or nation
- Show a video or DVD from that nation (if you made one personally, that is great because you can pause it to tell personal stories). See Galapagos Island video footage.
- Plan a trip to a zoo to examine rain forest plants and animals.
- Organize an assembly that includes musicians, performers, or story tellers from another culture
- Collaborate with another teacher to create meaningful interdisciplinary projects:
Geography: Andes, Galapagos, cities, Amazon River, volcanoes
Music: contemporary, indigenous, Spanish influence
Science: ecosystem, sustainable development, medicine, oil, birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, vaccinations required, Darwin
Business: Business ethics, industrialization versus environmental preservation, profit motive, exporting flowers, oil, bananas, and shrimp
Economics: import/export, dollarization
Food Science: Ecuadorian diet
Character Education: multiculturalism, social inequality. Environmental awareness, global citizenship
Government: Ecuadorian government
Linguistics: Spanish, Quecha
- Additional thoughts:
Which country will I teach about (choose one as an example)?
How can I connect this specific country to other subjects (interdisciplinary education)?
How can I teach about this culture or country in a way that students will never forget?
