Smart Boards cost from $1300 – $1500 each, depending on the model and size. There are various other brands of electronic white boards available. Wheeled stands for the boards are an additional $125, and assemble easily. As of this writing, we used the SB 580 72” (diagonal) Smart Board, with the Opti-Pro surface to reduce glare, from Smart Technologies via Presentation Media. Data Projectors cost from $700 – $1000 each, depending on the model and number of lumens (1800 or greater is standard for classrooms, as of this writing). If necessary, add the cost of shades or other room-darkening measures to your total cost. As of this writing, we used the ViewSonic or InFocus data projectors with digital input from B & H Photo and Video. Laptops cost from $800 – $1500 each, depending on memory, processor speed, and the usual functions. As of this writing, we built our own laptops with our choice of specs from Dell Computers. Macs work just as easily with Smart Boards as well. Extra long VGA, USB or digital cables cost from $25 – $35 each, depending on length and type. This is the cable needed it to connect the ceiling data projector (above a drop ceiling) to your laptop at the front of the room. As of this writing, we ordered 25-foot and 50-foot cables online or via purchase order from ProLink LLC Cable Club. Ceiling mounts and brackets cost from $200 - $300 each, depending on the type (I-beam or Truss assembly – look at each classroom’s ceiling and check with maintenance), model, size and brand. Remember to order adjustable length extension columns (to bring the projector several feet down from high ceilings), which are an additional $75 each, and projector mounts that allow for tilt and finer leveling adjustments (an additional $150 each). As of this writing, we used Peerless mounts from Valient International Multimedia. Rolling carts are another item you’ll need, but which you probably already have in your building. Type is relatively unimportant, although we’ve made use of the storage cabinets under some carts to store speakers, carrying cases, extension cords, etc. There are many types of carts easily available via school supply vendors. White boards and markers are a useful purchase - to install on either side of Smart Board in the place of chalkboards. Chalkdust is an enemy of laptop keys and data projector filters; budgeting for whiteboards is prudent to protect your investment. There are many types widely available in all price ranges from school supply vendors. |
