Performance Standards

A Performance Standard refers to an expected level of achievement in a subject area at a particular time.  It is equivalent to a benchmark.  For example, see the Wisconsin Standard G for Science.   Performance Standards describe how well students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and/or skills."Content Standards describe what students should know and be able to do. These standards describe the information or skills essential to practice or apply in a particular discipline or content domain "( Marzano, Pickering, & McTighe, 1993).   For example, principles of the U.S. constitution or the analysis of historical documents.

To ascertain whether a student has met an a performance standard (or, in other words, has reached a "competency", or "proficiency"), a passing score (or set of passing scores) is chosen.  In New Jersey, the passing score is simply a numerical point along the score scale, and this is the "proficency" level.
