Special
education teachers providing direct instruction in academic content
in self-contained settings in grades K-8
must
satisfy the federal definition of a Highly Qualified Teacher at
the elementary generalist level.
Special education teachers providing direct instruction in academic
content in resource/replacement settings in grades 6 and above or
in self-contained settings in grades 9-12
must
satisfy the definition of a Highly Qualified Teacher for each content
area they teach
must
satisfy the definition based on the grade level of the content they
teach (rather than the age of the students); and
this
may mean satisfying elementary, middle and/or secondary levels.(If
qualify at secondary level, do not have to re-qualify at other levels.)
