Definition- A
paraprofessional is a non-certified employee who provides instructional
support in a program supported with Title I, Part A funds.
Funding
- A
portion of Title
I funds must be allocated for paraprofessionals to meet the new requirements.
- A
portion of Title
I funds must be allocated for paraprofessional
professional development.
- Funding
from other Titles (II, III, V, VII) may also be used to meet
the needs of paraprofessionals in Title I schools.
Duties
- Provide
one-on-one tutoring when a student is not being instructed
by a teacher.
- Assist with classroom management.
- Provide instructional assistance in a computer lab.
- Conduct parental involvement activities.
- Provide support in a library/media center.
- Act as a translator.
- Provide instructional support under the direct supervision of a teacher.
Coursework Requirements
- Effective January 8, 2002, targeted assistance and schoolwide programs
are required to hire paraprofessionals who meet the following criteria:
- Complete an Associates degree.
- Complete 2 years of college coursework or.
- Pass a rigorous test showing the ability to assist with the teaching
of reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Previously hired para-professionals have until January 8, 2006, to
qualify.
Options for fulfilling the requirements are as follow:
- Community or locally designed four-year colleges

- Other
- Exemptions to these requirements apply if the sole duty is
one of the following:
- Conducting parental involvement activities.
- Acting as a translator.
- Providing personal care services and.
- Assisting in a library/clerical role.
