PART ONE Think Ahead
  1. Why is reading aloud to children important? List at least three ways that read alouds benefit students.
  2. Describe at least two reading strategies that can be taught during a read aloud.
PART TWO

Write a lesson plan for conducting a read aloud in your classroom using the following format. Include the duration of the lesson plan and the target age of the students.

Refer to the lesson plan rubric as a guide. After you have completed your plan, share it with your colleagues. Use the discussion rubric as a guide to determine the level of critique expected if using a discussion board, or modify it for in-person discussions.

How could you set a purpose for reading the book? List an activity you might use to introduce a story in order to access prior knowledge. How could you support ELL and special education students when introducing your read aloud?

How will you choose the text? List the steps that you will follow before, during and after the read aloud. How will you introduce any necessary vocabulary? Will you read the text more than once? How will this lesson be taught? Whole group? Small group?
