The Cover

 

Watch (or listen) to Ms. Neumann. Notice that she:

A. For reading,
   • uses the cover to engage students in both text and illustrations,
   • encourages students to make predictions based on the cover; and the predictions set the purpose for reading,
   • fosters the development of oral language by initiating conversation about what they have already learned in the classroom,
   • allows students to make connections to the new text,
   • provides a high degree of support for children in order to access the text, and
   
B. For management,
   • gives time to the students to respond to questions,
   • guides questions and moves the topics along,
   • waits for the student to finish speaking, and
   • listens.
