Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Comprehension

Assignment

Comprehension Assessment

PART ONE Think Ahead
  1. What is the rationale for practicing guided comprehension in the primary classroom?
  2. List three of the comprehension strategies modeled in the video.
  3. How can you plan for guided application and practice of the strategy being taught as students work in small groups?
PART TWO

Create a lesson plan for the initial demonstration of a guided comprehension strategy. (Example: Choosing a story from the core reading program or a content area selection and selecting a list of words or phrases that are central to that selection. Have students assist you in constructing a predicted version of the text.) Remember that this lesson should be demonstrated whole group; the students will later work in small groups to revisit and practice the strategy. This is referred to as guided application and practice.

Refer to the lesson plan rubric as a guide. After you have completed your plan, share it with your colleagues. Use the discussion rubric as a guide to determine the level of critique expected if using a discussion board, or modify it for in-person discussions.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Grade level, standard, strand and CPI: ___________________________________________

Materials: _____________________________

Objective: ____________________________________________________

Connect:
How does this strategy activate your students’ prior knowledge? How can you provide extra support for your ELL and special education students?

Teach:
Describe the steps and procedures you will follow as you demonstrate the strategy and provide practice and support through small group follow-up activities. What practices does this model incorporate that specifically support the comprehension of your ELL and special education students? (Example, pre-teaching vocabulary)

Link:
How do you think you could incorporate this model in your reading program? What will the other students in the class be doing as you meet with smaller groups? This model suggests Student Facilitated Comprehension Centers that provide students with the opportunity to apply the strategy you have taught. Students may work independently, in small groups or with partners.

Assessment:
How can you effectively assess your students’ understanding of and use of the strategy you presented in your lesson plan? (Observation of student participation, applied teaching techniques: student work)
