Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Fluency


Introduction to Module

Fluency is the ability to read text accurately and quickly (NRP Report). Fluency is the "clear, easy, written or spoken expression of ideas with freedom from word identification problems that might hinder comprehension in silent reading or the expression of ideas in oral reading."1

Three important characteristics of fluent reading are:

  • accuracy of decoding,
  • automaticity, and
  • prosodic reading.
