Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Motivation and Background Knowledge

Assignment

Motivation and Background Knowledge Assessment

PART ONE Think Ahead
  1. What are the three ways that are mentioned in the video to motivate students as well as to encourage their engagement in learning? (the use of collaboration, meaningful praise, and appropriate prompts)
  2. List three ways to develop students’ background knowledge when introducing a new text selection or unit of study.
PART TWO

Write a lesson plan for developing schema using one of the strategies demonstrated in the video.  Link this to your comprehensive reading program or a content area selection.

Refer to the lesson plan rubric as a guide. After you have completed your plan, share it with your colleagues. Use the discussion rubric as a guide to determine the level of critique expected if using a discussion board, or modify it for in-person discussions.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Grade level, standard, strand and CPI: __________________________________

Materials: _________________________________________

Objective: ______________________________________________

Connect:
As you review your lesson plan, think about ways that you can include the motivating factors of collaboration, meaningful praise and prompts if needed. Be aware of the effects of being judgmental or ‘editorializing’ as you interact with students.

How does this relate specifically to your ELL students? What is the most explicit way to provide missing background knowledge for your ELL students?
How does establishing background knowledge and providing motivation support your special education students? Is motivation an important consideration as you plan instruction for these students?

Teach:
List the steps and procedures you will follow. In order for all of your students to gain the benefit of the whole class’s background and experience, your lesson will probably be presented as a whole class activity. How can you add the element of collaboration as a part of your instruction?

Link:
How can you support your students as they read informational text? What kind of background knowledge about reading nonfiction text can you elicit? (Using conventions of text, graphs, pictures, indices as support as well as making a connection to their own lives and experiences)

Assessment:
When is it appropriate to assess a child’s level of motivation or background knowledge?
