Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Phonemic Awareness

Assignment

Phonemic Awareness Assessment

PART ONE Think Ahead
  1. What is phonemic awareness?
  2. How does phonemic awareness differ from phonics?
  3. How can you determine if a child is phonemically aware?
PART TWO

Write a lesson plan for teaching a phonemic awareness activity. Include the duration of the lesson plan and the target age of the students.

Refer to the lesson plan rubric as a guide. After you have completed your plan, share it with your colleagues. Use the discussion rubric as a guide to determine the level of critique expected if using a discussion board, or modify it for in-person discussions.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Grade level, standard, strand and CPI: __________________________________

Materials: _________________________________________

Objective: ______________________________________________

Connect:
Would it be appropriate to teach a phonemic awareness activity outside of the literacy block?  Give an example. How would you determine the optimal time of day for this lesson?

Teach:
How will you determine the phonemic awareness skill that needs to be taught? Will your instruction be whole or small group? How will you assess your students’ needs and use that information to form instructional groups? Can you incorporate phonemic awareness instruction in your guided reading lesson? Why or why not.

Link:
Who benefits from phonemic awareness instruction?  How does phonemic awareness instruction during shared reading help ELL students? How does it support Special Education students?

Assessment:
Describe the assessments discussed in the module (CRP assessments, Yopp Singer, observation).
