  1. Onset - An onset is the initial consonant(s) sound of a syllable (the onset of bag is b-; of swim is sw-).

  2. Phoneme - A phoneme is the smallest part of spoken language that makes a difference in the meaning of words.

  3. Phonemic awareness -Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to focus on and manipulate phonemes in spoken words.

  4. Rime - A rime is the part of a syllable that contains the vowel and all that follows it (the rime of bag is -ag; of swim, -im).

  5. Shared Reading - Shared Reading is an interactive process where children and teachers read together reading and rereading from bigbooks, poems, nursery rhymes with a specific purpose (enjoyment, specific skill work, fluency, etc.).

  6. Syllabication - Syllabication is the act of breaking words into syllables.
