Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Phonemic Awareness

Introduction to Module

"Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of speech sounds, or phonemes."

In this module, participants will view classroom activities and hear from a research expert and panel. The activities related to rhyming and syllabication shown in the video sometimes come under a broader umbrella of Phonological Awareness. However, sometimes Phonemic Awareness and Phonological Awareness are used synonomously. For the purposes of this video, the focus is on rhyming and syllabication and thus we will only focus on a portion of phonemic awareness leaving topics such as blending, deleting, segmentation and isolation for further study.
