Guidance: Whole Group Instruction - Syllabication Overview The teacher and class clap out the syllables heard in student names. After they clap, a student helper places a number above the student name that has been used. The number corresponds to the number of syllables heard in the name. Classroom Activity: Observations Notice in the reflection portion of the segment, the teacher mentions that phonemic awareness activities should be short (5-10 minutes). She also mentions scaffolding. Students receive the support they need in small group settings before being allowed to work independently at centers. In addition, the teacher discusses the various strategies used in phonemic awareness instruction including deleting sounds and rhyming, and syllabication. |
