Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Phonics

Guidance - Centers

Overview

In this segment of the video, the teacher directs students to color-coded literacy centers. Each center focuses on the previously taught phonics skill, yet each uses a different instructional approach.

Classroom Activity: Observations

The centers allow students time to practice skills they learned during the whole group lesson.

Center Activities:

  • Linking Letters - Students are asked to take letter tiles and fit them together to make as many words as possible.
  • Chunking Activity - Students roll dice with word chunks. They are asked to make words using the chunks.
  • Making Words Center - Students cut letters apart and put them together to make words.
  • Word Sort Activity - Students take patterns in words they know and put them in columns. Then they would have buddy sorts as a method of scaffolding and speed sorts to build automacity.

Observe how the students are allowed to help each other as they practice. Also notice in the teacher's reflection that the whole group phonics instruction is short.
