Video-based Reading Strategies and Techniques: Phonics

Practice - Whole Group

Now that you've viewed the video and read the Guidance section of this module:

  1. Consider a theme unit (cross-curricular in nature). It could be science/language arts literacy, social studies/language arts literacy, or mathematics/language arts literacy for example.
  2. Select a book of poems or a storybook connected to your theme.
  3. Select words from the passage (poem or story) that could be used in a mini-phonics lesson.
  4. Conduct a read aloud using the poem or story. Ask comprehension questions to review science, social studies, or other content area concepts related to the read aloud text.
  5. Use the same whole group instructional strategies seen in the video clip to conduct a phonics mini-lesson.
