The Big Green Monster Teaches Phonics in Reading and Writing	Students begin with a shared reading of the story, "Go Away, Big Green Monster!" by Ed Emberley. Students examine onset/rime patterns, review sight words in the story, and play a card game to reinforce high-frequency vocabulary. As a culminating activity, students write stories about the monsters to publish online. Grades K-2.
Musical Chair Phonics	Word cards are placed on chairs. Students play the game Musical Chairs. Students must correctly pronounce words after the music stops.

The Role of Phonics in Reading Instruction. Summary of a position statement of the International Reading Association.	The Association supports: * research into effective phonics instruction, * teacher education initiatives that encourage the best practices in teaching phonics, * parent education concerning the place of phonics within the total reading program, and * curriculum development that effectively integrates phonics into the total reading program.
