Executive Director: Mario Barbiere
Bio:Dr. Mario C. Barbiere
Dr. Mario C. Barbiere is the Executive Director for the NJDOE's Region 5 Regional Achievement Center which serves Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex Counties. In his role, he oversees the mission of New Jersey's Regional Achievement Centers to work in partnership with struggling schools and their districts to set clear goals for student growth, put proven turnaround principles into action, and use data to drive decision-making and accountability. Working together, the goal of closing the achievement gap and preparing all students for success in college and career can be achieved. His educational career includes the roles of teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent, and associate professor, as well as Network Turnaround Officer (NTO) as part of the School Improvement Grant in Newark Public Schools. He also teaches graduate courses for teachers pursuing their principal and supervisor certification and mentors new administrators enrolled in the New Jersey Leader to Leader program. He has provided over 40 workshops at the local and state level on brain research and lesson design, instruction, gender differences, and classroom management. Dr. Barbiere earned his B.A. degree from Youngstown University, Ohio, and an M.A. in Educational Administration with concentration in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University, NJ. He received his doctoral degree at Seton Hall University in Educational Leadership, Management and Policy. In his leisure time, Dr. Barbiere is currently working on a book addressing brain research, self-regulated learners, and instructional delivery. He enjoys doing research on instruction, fishing, traveling with his wife, Alice, and spending time with his four sons – Jim, Chris, Michael, and Matt.
