George E. Fitzmaier
George E. Fitzmaier took charge as the U.S. Army Fort Monmouth Garrison Manager in a Transfer of Authority ceremony on 21 October 2009. Mr. Fitzmaier will oversee Garrison operations, programs and services, as well as the closure of the Fort over the next two years.
Prior to accepting the colors, Mr. Fitzmaier was the deputy to the Garrison Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Monmouth (USAGFM), since January 2003. He was the principal civilian advisor to the Fort Monmouth Garrison Commander on all matters relating to installation management and base operations support for an installation encompassing 1,126 acres of land, 5,000,000 square feet of building space, 667 family housing units, and approximately 9,000 employees. Mr. Fitzmaier led the Garrison team of directors and office chiefs who provide base operations services including installation logistics, public works, facilities engineering, housing, information technology, safety, physical security, crime prevention, and morale, welfare and recreation services for the entire Fort Monmouth community. Mr. Fitzmaier initially served as the Garrison Chief of Staff, leading the transition of the Garrison organization to the Installation Management Command. He currently leads the planning and execution for all installation activities supporting the relocation of mission organizations and closure of Fort Monmouth as a result of BRAC 2005.
Mr. Fitzmaier's prior assignments include an assignment as Deputy Director and Chief of Planning and Environment for the Directorate of Public Works, USAGFM, from October 1995 to December 2002. In this position, Mr. Fitzmaier managed facilities, housing, and public works services for all installation activities, and DPW business areas for facilities engineering design and construction, operations and maintenance, housing, environment, and real property master planning for Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
Mr. Fitzmaier began his career in government service at Fort Monmouth in 1979 as a Civil Engineer intern in the Directorate of Public Works. His awards include the U.S. Army Materiel Command, Directorate of Public Works - Engineering Plans and Services Executive of the Year (Winner, 1994; Runner-up, 1991), and the Commander's Award of Civilian Service. He is a member of the Association of the United States Army, the Association of Defense Communities, and the International City/County Management Association.
Mr. Fitzmaier received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson College of Technology, now Clarkson University. Mr. Fitzmaier also holds a Master of Science Degree in Management from Florida Institute of Technology.
