In January 2008 Michael J. Mahon began serving his first term as mayor of Oceanport. Prior to being elected mayor, Mr. Mahon served as a member and Secretary of the Oceanport Capital Improvement Advisory Committee for 5 years and on the Oceanport Borough Council for 3 years in charge of Finance & Administration, Fire Services, Public Works and Engineering, and Cable & Technology.  His accomplishments included development of long range capital plans, the adoption of purchasing controls, implementation of an employee evaluation program, and establishment of the Fire Committee, adopting standard design elements for road improvement projects and the modernization of the emergency services communications system.

During his tenure as councilman, Mr. Mahon also served in varying capacities including the Oceanport Planning Board, liaison to the Environmental Commission, Library Association and Buildings & Grounds Committee. Mr. Mahon currently serves on the Two River Council of Mayors, an organization comprised of 14 eastern Monmouth County mayors. 

Prior to serving in local government, Mr. Mahon served on the Building Plan Review Committee and Ad Hoc Referendum Committee for the Oceanport Board of Education, and as Assistant Fire Chief and Chief of Department of the City of Long Branch, NJ. He remains a volunteer firefighter and 27 year volunteer member of the Phil Daly Hose Co. LBFD. Mr. Mahon is actively involved in youth athletic programs and coaching. He is also a founding member and former executive board member of the Oceanport Sports Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the support of recreational programs and facilities in the Oceanport area. Most recently, this organization teamed with Colts Neck Polo and Monmouth Park Racetrack to host the Breeders Cup FanFest Polo Match; successfully raising funds in support of park improvements.

Mr. Mahon is a Roadway Manager employed by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in the Garden State Parkway Division, having previously worked as a Field Supervisor in the Buildings Division of the former New Jersey Highway Authority. He attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology and holds a State license for Electrical Contracting.   He is a graduate of the NJATC/IBEW Electrical Apprentice School and member of IBEW Local 400 and AFSCME Local 3914. He currently serves as a member of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Planning Authority.

Mayor Mahon has resided in Oceanport for over 18 years. He and his wife Allison have three children, Kristen and Michael Jr., and Andrew.
