Robert A. Romano

Acting Treasurer of New Jersey Department of the Treasury

Robert A. Romano was sworn in as Acting State Treasurer on July 6, 2015. From 2010 until July of 2015, he served as Deputy State Treasurer, providing senior-level assistance to the State Treasurer in the management and operation of all aspects of the Department of the Treasury’s activities.  He advised the State Treasurer regularly on issues relating to procurement, pensions and benefits, property management, public finance, investor disclosure information, unclaimed property and the N.J. Lottery. 

In his role as Deputy State Treasurer, Romano also supervised the work of several Division Directors, including the directors of procurement, budget and accounting and investments. He represented the State Treasurer on the boards of the N.J. Sports and Exposition Authority, the State House Commission, the State Leasing and Space Utilization Committee and the Commission on Capital Budgeting and Planning. He also acted as Treasury’s liaison with the Division of Law.

Romano has twenty years of experience with the Department of Law & Public Safety’s Division of Law. He is formerly a New Jersey Assistant Attorney General in Charge of Financial Affairs, where he supervised the work of four sections within the Division: Treasury, Transportation, Construction and Condemnation, Banking and Insurance, and Debt Recovery. Romano also served as Deputy Attorney General dealing with matters related to Treasury, the Housing Mortgage Finance Agency, and the Environmental Infrastructure Trust.

Romano is a graduate of Rutgers Law School, the University of Michigan and Rutgers College.
