The Environmental and Occupational Health Surveillance (EOHS) Program is committed to understanding the public health impact of human exposure to hazardous substances in the environment and in the workplace, providing information to the public, and preventing disease and injury by the reduction or elimination of exposures and hazards. The activities of the EOHS Program encompass the following areas:
- Environmental Health Hazard Assessment: Staff in this project conducts health assessments in communities where New Jersey residents may have been exposed to hazardous chemicals in their environment. They also study the possible health impacts that Superfund and other hazardous waste sites could have on nearby residents.
- Occupational Health Surveillance: Staff in this Unit uses multiple data sources to track workplace injuries and illnesses. They use this information to develop intervention strategies and provide employers with practical solutions to reduce hazards in New Jersey workplaces.
- Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT): The New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection collect data on health, human exposures, and environmental hazards. The New Jersey EPHT Network seeks to bring this information together. Tracking data can be used to help understand patterns and trends in environmental hazards, levels of human exposure, and patterns and time trends in diseases.
- Cancer Surveillance: This Unit provides up-to-date statistics on cancer incidence and mortality from the New Jersey State Cancer Registry, addresses cancer cluster inquiries, and monitors cancer patterns and trends.
- ALS Surveillance: The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) public health surveillance project has the following objectives: a) to obtain reliable and timely information on the incidence and prevalence of ALS in New Jersey; b) to better describe the demographic characteristics of ALS cases; and c) to assist the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) in evaluating the completeness of the National ALS Registry.
