Asthma

Asthma is a disease that affects the airways that carry oxygen in and out of the lungs.  Asthma can begin at any age and there is no single known cause for asthma.  While there is no known cure for asthma, avoidance of environmental and occupational triggers, use of doctor-prescribed medications, and management of other health conditions can keep asthma attacks under control.

What Information Does the EPHT Network Contain About Asthma in New Jersey?

The NJ EPHT Network contains summary information about the number and rates of hospitalizations due to asthma in New Jersey.  It is important to note that asthma hospitalization rates do not measure the true number of asthma episodes, since it does not include those who manage symptoms themselves or who receive medical care in emergency rooms or outpatient settings.

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services’ Asthma Awareness and Education Program can be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 364, Trenton, NJ 08625-0364, or by calling 609 984-6137. The Asthma Awareness and Education Program publishes an Asthma in New Jersey report that contains detailed data on asthma prevalence, morbidity and mortality among New Jersey residents.
