Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalitions

Eight Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HM, HB) Coalitions were established by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) more than 20 years ago as part of an initiative to reduce infant mortality in 11 target cities.

The cities are: Atlantic City, Camden, East Orange, Irvington, Jersey City, New Brunswick, Newark, Orange, Paterson, Plainfield and Trenton.

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalitions are community-based and include consumers, community agencies, health care providers and other organizations or individuals concerned with improving families’ health in the target cities.  The Coalitions provide community outreach and education services aimed at reducing infant mortality in their areas.

Department of Health and Senior Services provides annual funding for the Coalitions.  This funding may be distributed to local agencies through a request for proposal process.  Guidelines for funding distribution are established by the NJDHSS.
