The Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the US Department of Health and Human Services funds three Healthy Start Initiatives in New Jersey. These community-based programs in Camden, East Orange and Trenton are designed to decrease infant mortality, low birth weight and racial disparities in perinatal outcomes by implementing the Healthy Start strategies of consortium, case management and outreach services in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. Services are provided to both mother and infant for two years following delivery and are designed to improve the health and well-being of their family.
