New Jersey's Active Influenza-like Illness (ILI) Surveillance Statistics
Week of December 25, 2000

Due to the Christmas recess, no absenteeism reports were received from schools.

Reports were received from 68 nursing homes with a total population of 9,497. The reported influenza-like illness rate was 2.11%, down slightly from 2.36% the week before.

Reports were received from 54 hospital emergency departments. During the 24 hour surveillance period, a total of 5,629 patients were seen, of which 7.69% were being seen because of a respiratory influenza-like illness. This figure was down slightly from 7.93% the week before. It is worth noting that in Northwestern New Jersey, this figure was up significantly from the previous week and this increase was seen at several hospitals in the region. This could represent the beginning of increased influenza-like activity in New Jersey.

There have been two laboratory tests positive for influenza in New Jersey in the past two weeks, both from Hackensack Medical Center. The first was type B and the second was type A. New York City has reported two cases of Influenza B and six cases of Influenza A.

These figures indicate that overall, New Jersey is still at baseline activity for influenza-like illness. However, with the increase in influenza-like illness seen in Northwestern New Jersey emergency departments and the influenza isolates that have been reported thus far, it is quite likely that influenza-like illness will increase in New Jersey in the coming weeks.
