Here are the most common questions asked by Software Vendors of the State MDS Automation Coordinator:

QUESTION ANSWER
When will the NPI be required? The NPI compliance date is May 23, 2007. However, CMS recommends that you obtain your NPI at least six months prior to this date to provide you with ample time to test your NPI.
The MDS Error Message - 399 states: "Inconsistent NPI: The NPI number submitted in W1 is not consistent with the NPI number submitted in the header record." This MDS error message - 399 has been changed from a fatal record error to a warning message. Will this change be permanent?
No, the error message will be changed back to a fatal error in the future. The NPI number (Section W1) is an optional field at this time and can be left blank.
Is a dash allowed as a response for any Section W MDS Items?
Items W2a, W2b, W3a and W3b allows an "unable to determine" value (a dash). If none of the reasons apply, the "unable to determine" value (a dash) should be coded
What is the current version of the MDS Assessment Form being used by NJ Facilities?
NJ is currently using the MDS Version 2.0, September 2000, Assessment Form for all Comprehensive MDS Assessments.
What is the current version of the MDS Medicare PPS Assessment Form being used by NJ Facilities?
NJ is currently using MDS Version 2.0, July 2002, PPS Assessment Form (MPAF).
Does NJ use Section "T" Therapy Supplement for MDS Assessments?
Section "T" is required for all Comprehensive MDS Assessments. However, the MPAF includes the required items from Section "T" (T1b, T1c, T1d and T3). No additional items from Section "T" are required when the MPAF is used.
Does NJ use Section "S"?
NJ does not use Section "S" in any MDS Assessments.
Does NJ use Section "U"?
NJ does not use Section "U" in any MDS Assessments.
Which Medicare Case Mix Index Set do you use?
NJ uses C04 - Medicare PPS 53 Group Urban for all facilities.
Which State Case Mix Group do you use?
NJ does not calculate the Case Mix for State.
Which Partial Quarterly Option do you use?
NJ uses the MPAF option.
Are dashes supported for the SSN (AA5a) and Medicare Number (AA5b) in your system?
Yes, dashes are supported.
Does NJ have the authority to collect MDS Assessments for Non-certified beds/facilities?
Yes, NJ has state regulations that require the transmission of MDS Assessments for residents in all licensed bed/facilities.
Does NJ collect AIDS/HIV information in MDS Assessments?
NJ does not collect AIDS/HIV data in the MDS Assessments.
