Reporting of Financial and Utilization Data

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services collects financial and utilization data from the State’s general, acute care hospitals to monitor hospitals’ financial status, availability of beds, service patterns and other issues to inform public policy. Failure to submit data in a timely manner results in fines.

Data from cost reports (operating margin and gross revenue from private insurers) also factor into the legislatively-mandated formula that allocates $381 million in charity care subsidies to the state's acute care hospitals annually.

Regulations governing submission of financial and utilization data:

  • N.J.A.C. 8:31B Hospital Financing Rules [pdf 514k]

  • N.J.A.C. 10:52, Subchapters 11, 12, 13 Charity Care [pdf 117k]
