On this historic day, New Jersey can breathe easier.

The Senate and Assembly should be commended for passing the Clean Indoor Air Act.

I would also like to thank Governor Richard J. Codey for his commitment and advocacy on behalf of this legislation.

This was the right thing to do. The health of the residents of New Jersey—especially those who are exposed to secondhand smoke in the workplace—will be better protected as a result of the Legislature’s action in approving this important bill.

In my view, smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke are the biggest public health threats that we face today. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in New Jersey.

Today’s action of the Legislature will indeed result in lives saved.
