Media Advisory: Health and Senior Services Commissioner to Visit HealthCorps Health Fair at Cliffside Park High

On Tuesday, October 11, New Jersey Health and Senior Services Commissioner Mary O’Dowd will attend a HealthCorps® health fair at Cliffside Park High School.

The HealthCorps health fair will highlight the program’s interactive curriculum on nutrition, fitness and mental strength.  Health Coordinators from three New Jersey high schools and students will organize and host the event.  Attendees will enjoy 10 interactive booths that feature topics such as:

o       Think Before You Drink – sugar content awareness

o       Making stress balls

o       Benefits of Dark Chocolate

o       Comparing the new USDA “My Plate” with the old “Food Pyramid”

o       Portion Distortion – serving size awareness

o       Healthy Food and Beverage Sampling

o       Several exercise programs including yoga and push-ups

This event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. at Cliffside Park High School, Palisade and Riverview Avenue Cliffside Park in the School Gym.

HealthCorps is a national service and peer mentoring initiative. In high schools, HealthCorps “Coordinators” empower teens in underserved populations to make simple lifestyle changes to enhance their well-being and resilience and take the message to friends, families and neighbors. Recent college graduates become HealthCorps "Coordinators" for two years and defer medical school or graduate health program studies to peer-mentor as public service - helping teens, their teachers and their families become health activists.
