Christie Administration Recognizes National Nursing Home Week During May 12 -18

2013 Theme is "Team Care: Everyone Pitches In!"

Marking National Nursing Home Week, Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd and Human Services (DHS) Commissioner Jennifer Velez today recognized residents and patients in long term and post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them and the families who support their loved ones.

''The 371 licensed nursing facilities throughout the state provide essential care for our state's most vulnerable,'' said Health Commissioner O'Dowd. "National Nursing Home Week is an opportunity to involve families and volunteers in a community-wide show of support. Participation in care is the best way to ensure residents and families are satisfied with the quality of care they receive."

First established in 1967 by the American Health Care Association, National Nursing Home Week is celebrated in an effort to promote the relationships among residents, their families, staff and the community at large.

"Staff in our nursing homes are caregivers, advocates and often like family to the residents they serve," said DHS Commissioner Jennifer Velez. "National Nursing Home Week allows us to highlight those relationships and show appreciation for everyone involved in the important work provided by nursing home facilities."

Throughout the week, facilities throughout the state and the nation will celebrate with open houses and tours welcoming families, friends and members of their communities.
