New Jersey Interagency Council on Osteoporosis

Vision:

STOP Osteoporosis - Screen, Treat, Overcome, Prevent

The New Jersey Interagency Council on Osteoporosis (ICO) is a multidisciplinary coalition comprised of members of the public; state government; and healthcare, academic and corporate communities. The ICO's mission is to advise the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services on and to participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive osteoporosis prevention and education program for the benefit of New Jersey residents.

Established in 1997, the ICO has successfully developed and implemented a range of consumer and professional education programs. A strategic plan was developed in 2010 to guide the ICO's activities through 2012.

Participation in Council initiatives is open to interested individuals and organizations.

The ICO provides guidance to the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services in the development and management of its Osteoporosis Outreach and Education Program. This program provides written materials to the public on the prevention, detection and management of osteoporosis. The Department also sponsors specific osteoporosis initiatives for older adults and adolescents.

Osteoporosis Outreach and Education. As part of the Interagency Council on Osteoporosis' Strategic Plan, outreach and education efforts focus on the following populations: children and adolescents; women age 25-50; early post-menopausal women; late post-menopausal women; older adults; persons with fractures; men; and patients with long-term glucocorticoid steroid use. Look for articles in the health section of your local newspaper and written material at public sites throughout your community.
