Social Adult Day Care Services

Social Adult Day Care emphasizes social and recreational activities in a group setting, with some health monitoring. Clients attending Social Adult Day Care usually do not need medical attention during the day, but may need supervision for safety and activities of daily living.

Social Adult Day Care is available under Global Options (GO) for Long Term Care, Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving (JACC), the Statewide Respite Care Program and the Alzheimer’s Adult Day Services Program. Reimbursement rates vary with each program.

The principle source of funding for Social Adult Day Care in New Jersey is through Social Services Block Grants (SSBG). The Division of Aging and Community Services apportions funding to the 21 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), which in turn contract with various providers in their county. Since providers may not charge Medicaid more than other funding sources, other State agencies use the Medicaid fee for service information as a benchmark.

Neither the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services nor the Department of Law and Public Safety license Social Adult Day Care centers. However, the centers must meet all local building code requirements. Centers wishing to provide this service are referred to the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) in Seattle, Washington, at 1-877-745-1440, info@nadsa.org, or http://www.nadsa.org for recommended guidelines as to what the service of Social Adult Day Care should include. In addition, the Division of Aging and Community Services has created a Frequently Asked Questions fact sheet [pdf 27k] you may find helpful.

To find an Adult Social Day Care center in your area, call your Area Agency on Aging toll-free at 1-877-222-3737.
