Get on the Road to Health and Fitness

Encourage more consistent physical activity by participants.

Maintain attendance and enthusiasm for monthly and weekly (summer) walks.

Provide time-limited program targeted to current non-exercisers.

Maintain high visibility of program among local residents through available media.

Utilize WEB site for program communication and record-keeping for those who are interested.

Individual Goals

Minimum of 5,000 steps, 2.5 miles, or 30 minutes per day (20 days/mo)

Keep daily records of activities

Set goal for the 20 day per month average and maintain the activity. Use activity on first month in program, as a baseline.

Achieve milestones and receive incentives. (Pins and Certificates of Recognition)

Fitness Coalition Responsibilities

  • Order logbooks from NJ Department of Health and Senior Services for participants to record their daily/monthly activity.
  • Set up system to record individual's progress - Web, member list.*
  • Announce participants' achievement each month (in meeting their goal) via announcements at walks, media and Web site.
  • Determine incentives, what, when, and how they will be awarded (pins).
  • Plan monthly walks and summer walks - maps, dates, times, permission of towns, guest leaders, etc.
  • Create and provide copies of local area maps that identify walking trails and/or 'neighborhood walks'.
  • Secure speakers for walking kick-off event.
  • Develop and provide other educational presentations and materials on walking and physical activity.
  • Plan regular media coverage. Encourage local papers and community bulletins to feature local residents 'caught in the act of walking'.
  • Place order for pedometers (if you are counting steps).
