The
Passaic River Institute runs an environmental science and computer technology
summer program for incoming 7th and 8th grade students in Newark. The program
runs all day for three two-week sessions, with about 20 students in each
session. The program focuses on the Passaic River basin and Newark Bay, combining
site tours, environmental education lessons, computer software lessons and
recreational activities. Students learn how to apply computer technology
to investigate a site or related issue and develop a presentation to explain
an important environmental issue related to one of the sites visited. Typically,
the mornings are spent in the field investigating an environmental phenomenon
or exploring a natural area. The afternoons are spent in the computer lab
analyzing data and preparing a presentation. Program goals include: 1)
Exposing students to fascinating and beautiful natural features within the
Passaic River Basin, 2) Encouraging curiosity and excitement about environmental
science and computer technology, 3) Encouraging students to attend college
by placing them in a university setting and interacting with college students
and professors, 4) Encouraging students to consider a career in ecology,
environmental science/engineering or computer technology. Program Operates
During: Summer. Enrollment Policies: Students submit written applications
including a recommendation from a teacher, which are evaluated and ranked
by program staff. Eligibility is restricted to students living in Newark
as specified by the private foundation which funds the program. Target
