March 23, 2007 Commission Meeting

The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened at the Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton on March 23, 2007. Chairman Laurence M. Downes presided. Highlights from the meeting include:

  • Swearing-In of New Member: Mr. Steven Weinstein was sworn in as a new public member of the Commission.

  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Kamal Khan, Associate Director, Office of Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences at Rutgers University, presented information about the success of the ODASIS program.

  • Chairman’s Report: Mr. Downes commented on the ongoing efforts to work jointly with the Presidents’ Council.

  • Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Oates commented on the Governor’s School program, the upcoming budget hearings, and planning for Fort Monmouth.

  • Presidents’ Council Report: Dr. Yaw summarized the March 19 Presidents’ Council meeting and commented on efforts to work collaboratively with the Commission on Higher Education.

  • Long-Range Plan Update: Chairman Downes commented on the iterative planning process and streamlined 2007 update of A Blueprint for Excellence. Dr. Oswald reviewed the recent proposed revisions, and the 2007 update was adopted unanimously.

  • EOF Student Day and EOFPA Conference Report: Dr. Lang provided an overview of the events held earlier in the week and commented on the attendance of over 900 people at Student Day.

  • DeVry University Petition for Relicensure: The Commissioners unanimously approved the relicensure of DeVry University.

  • Case Western Reserve University Petition for Graduate Nursing Courses: The Commissioners unanimously approved the licensure of Case Western Reserve University to offer four nursing courses at Shore Memorial Hospital.

  • HESAA Update: Mr. Smith commented on the impact of the federal budget on higher education.

  • Comments from the Public: Dr. John Pace, President of the Association of NJ County College Faculties, commented on the articulation and transfer agreement and the Blueprint for Excellence update.
