May 18, 2007 Commission Meeting

The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened at the Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton on May 18, 2007. Chairman Laurence M. Downes presided. Highlights from the meeting include:

  • Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Oates commented on NJIT and Montclair State University being awarded NSF grants in math and science, seven institutions being awarded Upward Bound awards, the Campus Security Task Force meeting, Governor’s School progress, and our summer interns.

  • Presidents’ Council Report: Dr. Yaw stated that the Council hadn’t met this month, but that they are continuing to advocate for higher education in the budget, monitoring the transfer bill, and anticipating their June 4 retreat.

  • Guest Speakers: Dr. Carl Van Horn and Mr. Bob Franks, John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, discussed workforce needs of New Jersey’s pharmaceutical and medical technology industry.

  • Special Needs Grant Awards: The Commissioners unanimously approved the grant awards for the Special Needs Program.

  • Adopt Form and Content for Institutional Profiles: The Commissioners unanimously approved the form and content for the institutional profiles.

  • College Bound Grant Awards: The Commissioners unanimously approved the grant awards for the College Bound Program.

  • Education of Language Minority Students Grant Awards: The Commissioners unanimously approved the grant awards for the Education of Language Minority Students Program.

  • College of Saint Elizabeth Petition to Exceed Mission: The Commissioners unanimously approved the College of Saint Elizabeth’s petition to offer the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership.

  • Adoption of Meeting Schedule for Fiscal 2008: The Commissioners unanimously approved the schedule of meeting dates for Fiscal 2008.

  • EOF, EFA, and HESAA Updates: Mr. Collins commented on EOF’s training of staff in June, EFA’s meeting on May 23 and its presentation to the Commission on June 22, and HESAA’s May 10 conference call.

  • New Business: Chairman Downes read a resolution of thanks for Deputy Attorney General Barbara Kleva, who is leaving her position.

  • Comments from the Public: Ms. Kathleen Malachowski, Vice President of the Association of NJ County College Faculty, commented on the importance of county colleges, their support of the Blueprint, and accomplishments at Ocean County College.
